Taylor Fritz’s 2020 Roland Garros campaign began on Sunday with a 7-5, 7-6(2), 1-6, 2-6, 6-3 victory over qualifier Tomas Machac. Fritz continued to serve well, dialing up 14 aces in the 5-set thriller. Machac’s 65 unforced errors proved to be a huge difference in the match.
Fritz will face Radu Albot in the second round. The two have met just once before, with Fritz defeating the Moldovan at Los Cabos in 2019. Fritz clinched the encounter in straight sets, winning 6-3, 6-2. A win in the second round would secure his best career finish at Roland Garros.
With a win over Ablot, Fritz would face the winner of Sonego and Bublik, who upset No. 8 Monfils in the first round.
